Residents of all backgrounds were invited to share their thoughts, concerns and experiences in support of the Latino population of our area and the family of Julio Serrano who was recently a victim of a vicious attack.

Blessing of the Fleet, September 15, 2009

In celebration of the 400th anniversary of the "discovery" of the Hudson River, by Dutch explorer Henry Hudson, period ships from Holland visited Peekskill and other river communities. Mayor Mary Foster asked Bishop Michael J. Champion, as president of PAPA, to perform the "Blessing of the Fleet." Hundreds turned out at the Peekskill Riverfront Park on a balmy late summer evening to witness the event.

The American Muslim Women's Association, a member organization of PAPA held a Ramadan Break-fast dinner at the Colonial Terrace on September 14, 2008. PAPA members were invited to attend.

Rabbi Claudio Kupchik Farewell celebrations

Celebrations for the farewell of Rabbi Claudio Kupchik from the First Hebrew Congregation of Peekskill were held on June 8, 2008 at the synagogue and an honorary dinner from PAPA members was given in his honor on July 23.

Street Naming - May 6, 2009

Dayton Lane in Peekskill, was honorarily re-named "Angelo Roncalli - Pope John XXIII Way" on May 6, 2008. The effort was spearheaded by Rabbi Claudio Kupchik, in remembrance of the the publication of "Nostra Aetate " the Second Vatican Council's "Declaration on the Relation of the Church to non-Christian Religions" which was begun under Pope John XXIII and completed under Pope Paul VI. The document revolutionized relations between the Jewish community and the Roman Catholic Church. Located on the side of the popular Beach Shopping Center, the road is a crossway between the First Hebrew Congregation and the Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Parish.

Jewish Center Desecration Rally

In an unfortunate display of antisemitism, the Mohegan Colony Jewish Community Center and Synagogue was desecrated by area youths on April 12, 2008. PAPA members, civic and community organization officials and local residents gathered in great numbers on April 13, 2008 to decry the act.

Town of Cortlandt Forum - November  29, 2007

After a Thanksgiving-eve cross-burning on the lawn of an African-American home in Cortlandt, the Town held a community forum on November 29, 2007. It was spearheaded by PAPA president, Rev. Dr. Adolphus Lacey, Town Supervisor Linda Puglisi and the Hendrick Hudson School District and held at the Muriel H. Morabito Community Center.
